At AAFE’s 44th Annual Lunar New Year Banquet, Christopher Kui and Suki Terada Ports were honored for their decades of community service.

Kui retired last year as executive director of Asian Americans for Equality, a post he held for 31 years. Ports retired from the AAFE board of directors after years of service. Kui and Ports received lifetime achievement awards at the banquet, held March 29, 2018.

Recently they sat down for a conversation with Bill Frey of Enterprise Community Partners. Over the decades, Enterprise has worked with AAFE on some of its most important affordable housing projects in New York City. Frey was first introduced to Asian Americans for Equality in the mid-1980s, when Enterprise helped AAFE renovate Equality House, its initial hosuing development.

During the interview, Kui and Ports discussed their beginnings in public service, AAFE’s evolution over the decades and where they see Asian American leadership going in the years ahead.
