HUNDREDS OF IMMIGRANTS RALLY IN ALBANY DEMANDING PRO-IMMIGRANT POLICIES' BETTER SERVICES AND MORE FUNDING

Immigrant New Yorkers rally in front of the State Capitol building demanding pro-immigrant policies, better services and more funding.

(Albany, New York, April 6, 2005) AAFE joined the New York Immigration Coalition and approximately 600 immigrant New Yorkers to rally and meet with elected officials about the lack of action on key immigrant community priorities by Governor Pataki and the State Legislature. The agenda included demands of equal rights and equal access to state services and information, language assistance services in hospitals and government agencies, and the need for more affordable housing.

"There needs to be more affordable housing for seniors in Flushing," said one Flushing resident during AAFE's visit with Assemblymember Jimmy Meng of the 22nd State Assembly District. According to a recent Queens Korean Seniors housing survey conducted by AAFE, 62% of those surveyed were living in severely overcrowded conditions and 85% of the respondents are paying 50% or more of their income on rent.

AAFE's delegation of staff and constituents visited with Assemblymembers Jimmy Meng Vito Lopez, Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senators Toby Stavisky, Frank Padavan and Martin Connor.
