This past August, AAFE welcomed Dan Ping and Nathalie as the organization’s first Financial Opportunity Corps (FOC) members.  The FOC program, sponsored by Points of Light and Bank of America, utilizes trained AmeriCorps VISTA members to work with organizations like AAFE to provide financial coaching to low- and moderate-income families in the communities they serve.  Through one-on-one or small group coaching sessions, Financial Opportunity Corps volunteers help community members develop strategies to reduce debt, improve credit, start saving for emergencies, access benefits and build assets for long-term financial health.

On Saturday, November 16, Dan Ping and Nathalie held a day-long training for volunteer financial coaches.  During the session, the coaches participated in icebreakers as well as discussed topics such as credit reports, coaching techniques, and goal setting.  The FOC members had spent the entire previous week preparing and were happy to see that their hard work paid off in the form of a productive training event.

“We are fortunate to have 15 enthusiastic volunteer financial coaches who are dedicated to serving the community,” said Dan Ping.  She added, “Nathalie and I have been busy recruiting volunteers since we began at AAFE three months ago, and we’re extremely pleased with the crop of coaches that we selected.”
