Tomie Arai is a public artist and community activist who lives and works in New York City. In the 1970s, through Basement Workshop, Tomie began her work connecting public space to community experience. Since then, Tomie has painted murals with community groups in Chinatown and the Lower East Side, and created works for New York City and state agencies. Tomie’s work incorporates her experience as an Asian American and explores the complex relationship between history and art, through which she believes a glimpse of common ground is made possible.
