About this photo
Every year, Asian Americans for Equality recognizes outstanding community leaders who have devoted their lives to serving the people of New York. Our 2018 honorees are: Scott Stringer, New York City comptroller; Yuh-Line Niou, New York state assemblymember; Carlina Rivera, New York City Councilmember; and Kirk Goodrich, director of development at Monadnock Development.
Scott Stringer has been the city’s comptroller since 2013. Previously he served as Manhattan borough president and as a state assemblymember, where he represented Manhattan’s West Side for 13 years. Stringer has a long and accomplished record of fighting for affordable housing, equal rights for all and economic opportunity for New Yorkers from every walk of life.
Yuh-Line Niou was elected in 2016 to serve as assemblymember in the 65th Assembly District, representing Lower Manhattan. She is the first Asian American to represent a Manhattan district in Albany. Previously, Niou was chief of staff to Queens assemblymember Ron Kim. In her time as an elected official, Niou has been a strong advocate for tenant rights, affordable housing and public housing and immigrant rights.
Carlina Rivera was elected in November of 2017 to the City Council’s District 2, serving the Lower East Side, East Village, Flatiron, Gramercy Park, Rose Hill, Kips Bay and Murray Hill. Previously, she was legislative director for former District 2 Councilmember Rosie Mendez. Rivera also served as director of programs and services at Good Old Lower East Side (GOLES), and was a member of Community Board 3. The lifelong resident of the Lower East Side brings to the Council a steadfast commitment to affordable housing and social justice.
Kirk Goodrich is director of development for Monadnock Development, a firm behind many of New York’s premier affordable housing projects. Previously, Goodrich managed the Housing Tax Credit syndication business for Enterprise Community Investment in the New York region.
We hope you will join AAFE, and our honorees, on March 29 at Jing Font Restaurant in Chinatown.
