At AAFE this month, we will be introducing you to some of the people who benefit from our programs and describing how your support helps make the dream of equality a reality for them, and for thousands of New Yorkers who access our services.
In our first installment, we would like you to meet Yuki Chen, a student in the honors program at City College and a resident of Flushing, Queens. She’s an intern at the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center and aspires to become a physician. Yuki still remembers her first terrifying days at Flushing High School, when the idea that she would become the first member of her family to attend college seemed like an insurmountable goal.
In her sophomore year of high school, Yuki joined AAFE’s youth program, taking part in service learning projects, learning about the college admissions process and making lasting friendships. Later, she became one of 13 student leaders in our Youth Leadership for College Access Program, in which peers help each other to complete college applications.
Today, looking back on her high school years, Yuki says, “The work that AAFE does is really meaningful. I really loved being involved in my community, and now, planning to become a doctor, I want to incorporate social work into my career.”
She adds, “The AAFE programs provide students with a community. A lot of the students come from immigrant backgrounds and some of them might not speak English, or they’re trying to learn how to speak English. They’re learning how to adapt, transition to public school in New York City. When I say community I mean a space where they can make friends and have role models that they can look up to for advice on courses, education, college, I would say just about anything.”
Every year, 1200 students and parents participate in our college readiness, service learning, financial literacy and parent engagement programs in Flushing. In the coming year, we want to expand our programs, helping even more young people achieve their dreams.
