Excitement is building for AAFE’s 45th Annual Lunar New Year Banquet, which will take place March 21, 2019 at Jing Fong Restaurant in Manhattan’s Chinatown. We’re thrilled to announce that State Sen. Jessica Ramos will be honored with a Dream of Equality Award along with three other inspiring members of our community.
Ramos is the newly elected representative in the 13th Senate District, which includes Jackson Heights, Corona, East Elmhurst, Woodside and Astoria. A longtime community activist, she’s chair of the Committee on Labor and a steadfast defender of immigrant rights.
She will be joining our previously announced honorees, including: Gregg Bishop, commissioner of the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS); Jin Park, the first DACA recipient to win a Rhodes scholarship; and Yee Ling Poon, an AAFE founder and attorney who has worked tirelessly to help immigrants fight for their rights.
Ramos was born in Elmhurst, Queens to an undocumented seamstress and a printing pressman from Colombia. She worked with several labor groups, including Build Up NYC, SSEU Local 371 and 32BJ SEIU. Ramos served on Queens Community Board 3 and was a district leader. She was Director of Latino Media for the City of New York. Last year, Ramos was elected to serve her community in the State Legislature.
