ASIAN AMERICANS FOR EQUALITY seeks an Executive Director to lead one of the nation’s preeminent Asian-American community development and advocacy organizations.



Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of Asian Americans and all of those who are in need. Founded in 1974 to advocate for equal rights, AAFE has transformed in the past four decades to become one of New York City’s preeminent housing, small business, social service, and community development organizations.

AAFE is committed to preserving affordable housing throughout New York City and to providing new opportunities for the city’s diverse immigrant communities. Employing innovative approaches, the organization has preserved and developed 86 buildings, created more than 800 units of housing, and continues to manage 612 of these units.  It has secured over $378 million in mortgage financing for homebuyers and disbursed over $46 million in loans to over 1,200 small businesses. Through a wide range of multi-lingual counseling services, AAFE provides education, financial assistance, and training to empower people, small businesses, and neighborhoods. Its research, advocacy, and grassroots organizing initiatives have helped to shape government policy and to effect positive change.  

Based in New York City with offices in Lower Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn, AAFE has a $15 million operating budget, assets of $115 million, a staff of nearly 100 dedicated individuals, and is governed by a Board of Directors. In addition, there is a large-scale development project in Kansas City, MO.  AAFE’s portfolio includes two US Treasury-certified Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs), each with its own governing entity, and membership in the Federal Home Loan Bank. AAFE is a NeighborWorks Chartered Member.



The Executive Director will provide leadership and vision for the AAFE organization, its subsidiaries, and its affiliated corporate entities. The Executive Director works in partnership with the Board of Directors to set the organization’s strategic direction and leads the staff in designing and implementing programs that advance the organization’s mission.

Working with a team of senior staff members, the Executive Director will be responsible for the following areas:


Program Management

Developing, securing funding for, and administering impactful programs that fulfill the mission of the organization and meet the goals and priorities as determined by the Board of Directors.

Leading the development of innovative housing and community development projects that respond to the dynamic needs of New York City’s Asian American, low-and moderate-income, and immigrant communities and entrepreneurs.

Overseeing the management and maintenance of all properties and assets under the control of the organization.


Staff Development and Management

Recruiting and retaining talented staff members who are inspired to work in a mission-driven, community-based organization.

Fostering a collaborative work environment that promotes accountability and excellence.

Ensuring that AAFE continues to contribute to the training and development of the next generation of community development leaders.


Fiscal and Operations Management

Overseeing the fiscal management of the organization and its affiliated corporate entities, specifically the presentation of an annual budget to be approved by the Board of Directors and coordinating the annual independent audit.

Formulating and recommending to the Board of Directors all policies and procedures governing sound organizational operations and practices.

Overseeing the negotiation and implementation of agreements and contracts for the organization, with the advice and consent of the Board of Directors.



  • The ideal candidate for Executive Director is a visionary leader who can effectively champion the rights of Asian American, low- and moderate-income, and immigrant communities and entrepreneurs; influence policy makers and public/private partners; promote collaboration among diverse communities; and inspire stakeholders to advocate for equity and justice.
  • Ability to engage and communicate effectively with all key stakeholders, including staff, Board of Directors, community members, funders, policy makers, and government entities.
  • Experienced manager with an open and collaborative management style. Adept at staff development and inspiring team members to implement the articulated vision of the organization on a daily basis.
  • At least 10 – 15 years of experience in the community development field, with significant expertise in more than one of the following areas:
    • Community advocacy and program service delivery
    • Real estate or affordable housing development and management
    • Economic development and small business lending
    • Mortgage lending
  • Proven track record in the following areas:
    • Non-profit management
    • Advocacy
    • Fundraising
  • Cultural competency in, and sensitivity to, Asian American, low- and moderate-income, and immigrant communities and entrepreneurs in urban environments.
  • Direct experience with New York City-specific regulatory and government entities.
  • Familiarity with housing and community development finance, Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC), Small Business Administration (SBA) programs a plus.
  • Language ability in an Asian language preferred.
  • College degree required, advanced degree in related field preferred.
