Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE) congratulates Zohran Mamdani and all of the candidates who won office in New York City’s 2025 general election. Mayor-elect Mamdani is our city’s first Asian American, South Asian and Muslim mayor – a historic achievement for all of our city’s vibrant and diverse communities. His victory on Tuesday evening inspired New Yorkers who have too often been overlooked and marginalized, mobilized a new generation of engaged voters and brought New York’s affordability crisis to the forefront as an urgent priority.
For more than a half century, AAFE has been dedicated to advocating for our most vulnerable community members, providing access to vital social services and economic opportunity and creating safe and affordable housing across New York City. We were heartened to see these issues elevated during the mayoral campaign and now embraced as priorities by the new administration.
Mayor-elect Mamdani has emphasized the importance of finding bold solutions to the challenges facing working families. Whether innovating new affordable housing programs or launching small business initiatives to empower low-income entrepreneurs, AAFE has always worked to help underserved communities overcome whatever challenges they were facing. We look forward to building on this work with the new mayor and his administration.
Together we can build an equitable city where every New Yorker has an opportunity to thrive.
